Filipino actor Onemig Bondoc glad to play gay

onemig bondocOnemig Bondoc's character Wilson on the Philippines TV series "Buttercup" left home in last season's finale episode after coming out to his disapproving father. What's it like for Bondoc to play a gay character? No problem. "I'm enjoying myself doing the role since it's a real challenge to me. It's something new," he says. He gets positive feedback from Filipino queers, who are often critical of television portrayals. "I know some stars who have played a gay character did get some nasty asides from people ... but I haven't experienced anything like that," he says, admitting that he was initially hesitant. "I really did have second thoughts in accepting the role, particularly because I'm not gay and I was anxious that I might have difficulty in playing it. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to play it well and, consequently, I would just look funny or ridiculous," says Bondoc. "Sabi ko nga sa sarili ko, this role could make or break me. I think it made me." ABS-CBN.com
